Room To Breathe

Room To Breathe

Room to Breathe was conceived as a nourishing, uplifting exhibition—a space for visitors to slow down, connect, and breathe.

Presented in Toronto at Avant Garde from April 12–23, 2025, the solo exhibition featured 33 ink paintings displayed in a 4,500 sq ft space filled with natural light, high ceilings, and quiet openness.

The simplicity of the white walls and large windows held the work with ease, allowing the paintings to breathe — and in turn, to offer space back to the viewer.

The works are primarily black ink on paper, with select pieces incorporating natural inks made from locally gathered nuts and berries, producing subtle browns, greens, and greys.

During the opening reception, guests were invited upstairs to experience 25-minute sound-and-silence sessions led by Laura Quinn, founder of the Soul Collective. Using crystal bowls, a large gong, and her voice, she guided participants into a quieter, more open state, enriching the sense of calm and presence within the exhibition.

The opening also included an artist talk, which concluded with a shared, experiential sound-making practice using voice — an invitation into presence, connection, and collective listening.

Room to Breathe was warmly received, and many of the paintings found new homes. One visitor shared:

“Your show was absolutely incredible.”

The exhibition reflected a continuing theme in my work: creating space to slow down, notice the rhythms between marks as well as the marks themselves, and allow room in our lives to breathe and reflect.
